I'm returning back to the Winter theme for a shot or two. This photo is a part of a foggy Winter shoot that I printed out, and proudly took to Thailand with me to show off to other Hiveans. Having been received so well there, I'm likely to make a foggy collection one day, and release it as an NFT too.

Docking posts floating in a foggy, snowy emptiness.
I am particularly proud of this photo, since it proves the age old adage that the best camera is the one you have brought with you. This one was taken with my smartphone, so the quality is not quite on par with those taken with professional camera equipment, but it is still breathtakingly beautiful.

I was thinking of what this brook was like when it was a river, when it flowed around and eroded this huge rock. These days there's nothing much left of that, and it's just a drowsy little creek.

The scenery today perhaps doesn’t match the posted photo, but at least we had a cold spout for a while last week. Let’s hope it’ll freeze soon, with some snowfall, so that Santa can arrive with presents.

Näyttäisi siltä, että panoramojen julkaisemisessa Internettiin on ihan pikkuinen ongelma. Ne vievät hirmuisesti tilaa. Tämän takia tämäkin panorama on ensin pienennetty hurjasti, ja senkin jälkeen aivan julmetusti pakattu. Tämä tarkoittaa sitä, että vaikka nyt pystynkin siirtämään sen ongelmitta WordPress-alustalle, ja se latautunee useimmille suht. ongelmitta, sen kuvanlaadussa on jonkin verran parantamisen varaa.
It would appear there is a slight problem when publishing panoramas on the Internet. They take up a monstrous share of space. For this fact, I had to first scale this image down quite a lot, and even after that, I had to pack the resulting jpeg file tremendously. This means, that while I can currently upload it on my WordPress site, and most of you can see it without too much problems, the picture quality is certainly lacking.
Tästä kuvasta en kuitenkaan aio julkaista tarkempaa versiota. Olisin halunnut siihen hieman enemmän taivasta. Ehkäpä onnistun paremmin jollain toisella kertaa.
I don't however plan to publish a high resolution version now. I would have liked to have just a little bit more of the sky visible. Maybe I will succeed a bit better some other time.
About a week ago, I visited the Vuolenkoski village.
Noin viikko sitten kävin Vuolenkosken kylässä.
It is a village in the northern part of the Iitti municipality in Kausala, about 35 kilometers to the East from Lahti. I didn’t take many photos because it wasn’t a particularly warm day, and there was also some rain. (My gear sadly isn’t waterproof yet.) But I am planning to visit the place again soon to get more photos.

Vuolenkoski on kylä Iiitin kunnan pohjoisosassa Kausalassa, noin 35 kilometriä itään Lahdesta. En tällä kertaa ottanut kovin monta kuvaa, koska sää oli hieman vilpoinen, ja kovin oikukas sateineen. (Kuvauslaitteeni eivät valitettavasti vieläkään ole säänsuojattuja.)
Olen kuitenkin suunnitellut jo palaavani Vuolenkoskelle kuvaamaan lisää pian.

On Saturday, me and my son Leo took our cameras and went to the Immilä Mill that is situated in Nastola, to shoot some photos of the Immilänjoki falls, and hopefully see and photograph the otter that lives there.
Downstream / Alajuoksu
Lauantaina otimme poikani Leon kanssa kamerat mukaan, ja menimme Immilän myllylle Nastolaan kuvaamaan Immilänjoen pikkuputouksia ja maisemia. Toivoimme myös näkevämme paikallisen saukon, josta olisimme sitten ottaneet kuvia.

We had taken our dog Ninnu with us, because the little thing was so adamant that we wouldn’t leave her home “alone”.
When we arrived, I took Ninnu for a walk, and let Leo take some photos by the riverside while I was away.
It soon dawned on me, that I would have to leave Ninnu in the car for the time being, as the snow was quite heavy and the crud would clump into huge snowballs stuck on Ninnu’s long hair.

Me otimme Ninnun mukaan, kun raukkaparka vaati niin kovasti, ettei me jätettäisi häntä “yksin” kotiin.
Kun saavuimme myllylle, jätin Leon kuvaamaan joenvarteen ja lähdin taluttelemaan Ninnua.
Huomasin pian, että Ninnun olisi paras odottaa meitä autossa, koska raskas nuoskalumi tarttui pian lumipalloiksi Ninnun pitkään turkkiin.
The Mill / Mylly
When I took Ninnu to the car, I met an older lady who told me she’d seen a goosander upstream. She was also fascinated about Ninnu, she hadn’t heard of a breed called Russian Bolonka before.
After Ninnu was safely in the car, I came back to shoot some photos.
I gave the long 75-300 mm lens to Leo, and took the 10-18 mm wide-angle lens for myself. I wanted to test out if I can take long exposures by hand with the built-in Image Stabilization (IS) switched on.
Flowing water / Virtaavaa vettä
Viedessäni Ninnua autolle, tapasin vanhemman rouvashenkilön, joka kertoi nähneensä isokoskelon yläjuoksulla. Hän oli myös kiinnostunut Ninnusta, eikä ollut koskaan kuullutkaan venäjänbolonka-rodusta.
Kun Ninnu oli turvallisesti autossa, palasin takaisin ottamaan kuvia.
Annoin pitkän 70-300 mm linssin Leolle ja otin itse 10-18 mm laajakulmalinssin. Halusin kokeilla kuinka hyvin voisin ottaa pitkän valotusajan kuvia, jos linssin sisäänrakennettu kuvanvakaaja (IS) on kytketty päälle.
Upstream, on the other side of the Mill, was some device of old. I couldn’t really make out what it was designed for. Maybe it was some kind of transmission device for the millstones.
Yläjuoksulla myllyn toisella puolelta, löytyi jonkinlainen vanha laite. En oikein ole varma mitä varten se on rakennettu, mutta ehkä se on jonkinlainen voimansiirtolaite myllynkiviä varten.
I moved a bit closer and captured some of that movement of the flowing water.
Siirryin hieman lähemmäksi, niin että sain otettua kuvan virtaavan veden liikkeestä.

While I was upstream shooting the little rapids and the contraption, Leo was by the downstream, learning to shoot the snowflakes falling from the sky. I need to help him with the editing tomorrow, and see how it went.
Ollessani ylävirran puolella kuvaamassa pikku koskea ja myllyn laitteistoa, Leo oli alavirran puolella harjoittelemassa taivaalta putoavien lumihiutaleiden kuvaamista. Pitänee huomisissa auttaa häntä kuvien editoinnissa ja katsoa miten meni.
I decided to go check up on how Ninnu was doing, so I walked along the river, and took some photos on the way.
Päätin käydä katsomassa miten Ninnulla menee autossa, joten kävelin joenvartta pitkin ja kuvasin matkalla muutamia kuvia.
I found this small house, that I just had to take a photo of.
Löysin pienen talon, josta piti myös ottaa kuva.
From the bridge on the road one could see how the river formed a tiny pond before flowing downstream as the small rapid.
Tienpuoleiselta sillalta näki, kuinka joki muodosti pienen lammen ennen alajuoksulle ryöppyävää pikku koskea.
On the other side of the bridge I found this nice riverbend.
Toisella puolen siltaa löysin tämän kivan pikku joenmutkan.
While we didn’t see the otter, we had a lot of fun. Ninnu however would likely disagree. She had to get new lumps of snow on the hairs of her feet as we took her for another walk before leaving, and it took us a while to clean her up before letting her back inside the car.
When we left, I turned the temperature of the heater to the highest, so that we’d all warm up, and that the leftover snow in Ninnus fur would melt off.

Vaikka emme nyt nähneetkään saukkoa, hauskaa oli. Ninnu tosin oli varmaan hieman eri mieltä. Ninnu sai uudet lumipallot jalkakarvoihinsa, kun kävimme vielä pikku lenkillä ennen lähtöämme ja niiden siivoaminen kesti jonkin aikaa ennen kuin pystyimme päästämään hänet takaisin autoon.
Kun lähdimme, löin lämmittimen täysille, niin että lämpenisimme ja että Ninnun karvoihin jääneet lumet sulaisivat pois.
I visited Vääksy yesterday, to take a quick look at Norrlin park, the surviving area of the famous Johan Petter Norrlin’s (PhD, Plant Sciences) estate park, that has been converted into a forest garden.

The info boards said I’d could freely roam, pick and taste the berries and/or herb leaves that grow in the park. Too bad nothing green actually grows in the Winter. It is just too cold, and there’s too much snow for the sunlight to get to the greens.
Infotaulun mukaan olisin saanut kierrellä alueella vapaasti, sekä poimia ja syödä marjoja ja yrttien lehtiä, mutta harmikseni mikään sellainen ei oikeasti kasva talvella. On aivan liian kylmä, eikä auringonvalokaan pääse kaiken lumen läpi kasvien lehdille.

At the southern end of the park, I saw the highway overpass. It was a very sunny day, and it affected the way I had to shoot. I’m glad I had the opportunity to use the dual-ISO function of my camera.
Puiston eteläpäädyssä näin moottoritien ylikulkusillan. Oli erittäin aurinkoinen päivä ja se vaikutti hiukan myös kuvaamiseenkin. On kuitenkin kiva, että pystyin käyttämään kamerani dual-ISO -toimintoa.

If you have a Canon camera, there is a possibility that you too can use the Magic Lantern app on to add more essential functionality to your camera, Dual-ISO being one. I especially like trap focus when using manual lenses. There’s a ton of functionality that a camera normally doesn’t have (but should).

Jos omistat Canonin kameran, voit käyttää Magic Lantern -sovellusta lisätäksesi kameraan tarpeellisia toimintoja, kuten Dual-ISO. The Cabin of Silence was simply a small gazebo by the river.

I was out of time, so I had to start getting back home.

Last night I found myself wanting to shoot some long exposures. I took all my gear and went for a quick drive around the town, looking for places to shoot photos in.
The lens I used in these photos was a Sigma Art 12-24mm 4.0. It is a bit front heavy lens, so I will likely need to find some solution to the ball-head slipping. It prevents me from shooting vertical.
It was a bit cloudy so I couldn’t get photos of the stars, but I guess I’m going to have to wait for a night like that. I just checked the weather forecast and it’ll be cloudy for the next 10 days at least.

I think it was a nice trip to the harbour today. After much of worrying that I wouldn’t get any photos done today because of it getting dark earlier, I still managed to get some good photos in the harbour in the afternoon, with my vintage Super Carenar MC f=35 1:2.8 lens.
